GTRI brief

Irradiation of export products should be done in India and not at the destination country

1-Several Indian products may require irradiation treatment at the US ports before entering the US market to comply with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) regulations and prevent the introduction of harmful pests and diseases.

2-Here are some examples of the products that needs irradiation treatment:

·         Fresh mangoes: Indian mangoes are known for their sweetness and flavor, but they can harbor fruit flies that pose a threat to US agriculture. Irradiation helps eliminate these pests without affecting the quality of the fruit.

·         Grapes: Similar to mangoes, grapes from India can carry fruit flies and other quarantine pests. Irradiation effectively disinfests them for safe entry into the US.

·         Pomegranates: The juicy arils of Indian pomegranates are a popular treat, but they can be infested with mealybugs and other insects. Irradiation treatment ensures they arrive pest-free in the US.

·         Spices: Certain Indian spices, like coriander seeds and fenugreek, can harbor insects and fungal spores. Irradiation helps decontaminate them for safer consumption in the US.

·         Wooden handicrafts and furniture: Wood can harbor wood-boring beetles and other insects that can damage US forests. Irradiation helps protect US trees from these pests.

·         Animal products: Hides, skins, and wool from animals in India can carry diseases like anthrax. Irradiation helps inactivate these pathogens for safe import into the US.

3-Irradiation in the USA, increases cost and uncertainity in case of rejection. A better way is to carry out irradiation in India before exports. Irradiation facilities are available in India that can meet the US import requirements. Few of these are:

·         Gujarat Agro Gamma Irradiation Facility in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

·         AKSHAR GAMMA STERILES LLP - Gamma Radiation Services In India in Ambernath, Maharashtra.

·         Agrosurg Irradiators (India) Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

·         GAMMA AGRO-MEDICAL PROCESSINGS PVT LTD in Pashamylaram, Telangana.

·         Gamma Tech India Private Limited in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu.

4-India may initiate dialogue with the US and other countries for allowing Irradiation in India

5-Benefits of irradiating in India:

There are several advantages to irradiating export products in India before sending them to the destination country.

·         Cost-effectiveness: Irradiation facilities in India are generally cheaper compared to those in the USA. This can save exporters significant costs on treatment fees.

·         Convenience and efficiency: Exporters can manage the entire irradiation process right within India, minimizing logistical complexities and potential delays at the US border.

·         Faster clearance: Products already irradiated in India are more likely to pass US inspections swiftly, avoiding potential holds or rejections at the port of entry.

·         Compliance assurance: Irradiation done in India can be pre-approved by USDA inspectors, guaranteeing compliance with US regulations and minimizing the risk of product detention or rejection on arrival in the USA.

·         Potential for wider market access: By having irradiation facilities readily available, India can cater to the irradiation requirements of more countries, opening up new export opportunities.
